Washington County Data Center
For the last Month, Washington County Commissioner meetings have been standing-room only as citizens voice their concerns about the potential for a Data Center to be built and then operated in Waterford. County Commissioner Charlie Schilling provided a statement during this week's commissioner meeting. "The data project in Waterford Township we've been discussing is being looked at on private land. Also, the NDA allows us to be able to be at the table whenever discussing opportunities and concerns within the county. As prosecutor Coyle stated last week, this project could move forward without us. I'm thankful we're working with a developer that wants to integrate into our community and not be isolated." One concern brought forth by citizens is the amount of energy used to run a data center. Schilling said this regarding that. "Washington County and the surrounding area have traditionally been an energy-producing county, producing energy that is put on the grid to benefit everyone, but mostly other areas outside of our communities. Locating this facility here allows us to use energy in the grid to produce good jobs, local revenue, and a pathway to building stronger schools and local infrastructure." Another concern is water, and whether harmful chemicals will be discharged. Schilling said, "This facility will use a closed-loop system that eliminates any significant wastewater discharge. No harmful chemicals will be discharged in the process. The developer will work with local water and wastewater officials closely throughout the construction process to ensure infrastructure is built out properly within the communities." The commissioners state that they plan to hold a public meeting once they have answers to the public's concerns. There is no set date for that meeting at this time.
