The City of Marietta is undergoing plans to repair some of its iconic brick streets this coming summer. We spoke with Marietta City Mayor Joshua Schlicher for more on the project.

"We've had construction estimates in the area of four to $5 million for a complete rebuild, and that includes curbs, drainage, and utility line replacement. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna do spot repair. Everything's gonna start from Fifth Street at that intersection to Front Street, and that'll involve anything that is subgrade. The bricks will be taken up; everything will be removed down to solid ground base, built back up, base level, and then reset the bricks. It will be a lot smoother when we are finished with it and safer."

The project will involve spot repairs on up to 7 downtown streets, totaling a fraction of the full repair cost, with the majority of the work focusing on Putnam Street.

Schlicher Said, "Traffic will be maintained during construction as best we can. There might be some times when the road will be shut down, but we'll give the public ample notice when we do those changes. But for the most part, we'll keep traffic moving as quickly and efficiently as possible during construction."

Mayer Schlichter anticipates the project beginning in May and wrapping up around the end of the summer. While the construction is a much-needed traffic improvement, Marietta doesn't plan to lose any of its signature brick street style.

"We want to keep the historical bricks when we do spot repair, there's some areas that we lose a certain quantity of bricks. We are going to attempt to try to keep as many bricks as possible and relay those, you know, we may have to source bricks from somewhere else and replace those."

Mayer Schlichter has long awaited the downtown project to improve road quality and better the conditions for Marietta's residents.
