Hune Covered Bridge

Back in 2020, the Hune Covered Bridge and the approach roadway were closed to the public. Washington County Engineer Roger Wright explained the decision.

"In 2019, we started to notice that the forward stone pier started to have a lot of unusual movement. It started to be concave in stones that were broken, they were displaced, things of that nature, and then in 2020, there was a slip that occurred on the approach roadway that then started putting pressure right on that gravity, Stone Pier that had already had some issues."

The original plan for the Bridge was to remove the existing Hune Covered Bridge and relocate it to a new location. This plan fell through when they were awarded only 70,000 dollars in state funds, and the project would cost much more. The Engineers' Office then had to shift plans.

"So we started pursuing the Transportation Alternative Program (TAP). We were fortunate to get a TAP award, but as part of the TAP award, it became a pedestrian-only structure. So with funding the bridge as a pedestrian-only structure, that allowed us to garner the right around the million and a half, 2 million that we needed for the rehab. So that's why the bridge itself is going to be pedestrian-only and remain closed to the public."

Because the Bridge is pedestrian-only, it will add a 10-minute detour for residents in the area. The Engineers' Office plans to open bids at the end of March. The hope is that construction will begin in Fall 2026 and be finished in the winter of 2027.
