The Washington County Public Library has a levy on the ballot for the May primary election. Justin Mayo has been the director for 20 years. He spoke with WMOA about the details.

"We had a levy, a replacement levy in November, and due to a clerical issue, that levy was voided. So that levy, even though it passed, is no longer available to us. So we were required to go for a new levy to replace that, and the board decided to replace it with a half mill instead of the full mill levy to try to give the taxpayers a break."

If the levy were to pass, the library could ensure success in its current services.

"Uh, we'd be able to continue offering the programs and, um, the summer reading programs, the DO programs. Um, we would be buying the same materials, um, keeping up with inflation, the cost of utilities to keep all our buildings open."

Mayo explains that there have been questions about why another levy is needed.

"After knowing that the levee was voided in November, making sure we share that information, 'cause that's the one thing people keep asking me is why we need another levee. And I have to explain to people that the levee was voided, that we do not receive that levee money, and they're not paying that levee money. And that this is a half-mill levee, not a full-mill levee. It's, it's half of what it was before, and it'll cost roughly $18 per hundred thousand dollars. Uh, home evaluation."

The primary is May 5th, but early voting is open.
