Daily Rundown and Coffee Takes – 09/01/15

Indians win opener with Jays

The Cleveland Indians picked up their 6th straight win and moved within two games of .500 with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays.

Danny Salazar improved to 12-7 by tossing 7 innings and striking out 10 to pick up the victory. Salazar allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs, both coming on Josh Donaldson's triple in the 5th when the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead.

The Indians scored two in the 7th off David Price to take the lead and hand Price his first loss in his six starts with Toronto. Ryan Rayburn tied the game with an RBI double and came around to score the go ahead run on Jerry Sands' RBI single. Price dropped to 13-5, going 7 innings and allowing 3 earned on 5 hits with 9 K's and a walk.

The Tribe tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 9th thanks to a throwing error on Donaldson. Cody Allen worked the final four outs to pick up his 28th save, ending the game by sitting Donaldson down on strikes.

Cody Anderson will be on the hill tonight as the Tribe look to keep the wins coming. Hear the game on WJAW FM 100.9 at 6:37pm.

Reds turn it on late, down Cubs

Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall, who was called up from Triple-A just yesterday, each launched two-run home runs in the 6th to give the Reds a lead they wouldn't relinquish in a 13-6 win against the Cubs.

Michael Lorenzen made the start for the Reds and lasted 4.2 innings after giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits. Ryan Mattheus had to pick up the final out of a four-run Cubs 5th inning and would pick up the win for his efforts, as Duvall's pinch-hit appearance for Mattheus in the 6th would put the Reds on top.

The Reds added six unearned runs in the 9th to run away with this one, and maybe best of all, closer Aroldis Chapman made a rare appearance at the plate and even scored in the rally. Chapman reached on Cubs 2B Starlin Castro's second error of the inning, and would round the bases to score on Jason Bourgeois' two-run double that capped the scoring. Chapman worked the final 5 outs to pick up his 26th save, striking out three while allowing a solo homer to Addison Russell.

The Reds and Cubs will be back at it tonight. Hear the game on WMOA AM 1490 at 7:35pm.

Pirates open with Brewers tonight

The Pirates will have their ace on the hill tonight as they open in Milwaukee. The Pirates bumped Cole up in the rotation, swapping places with Jeff Locke, so Cole can make a Sunday start against the Cardinals in the upcoming three-game series this weekend. Cole will go for his 16th win against Jimmy Nelson (10-10), who is 3-1 against Pittsburgh this year with an ERA under 2.

Hear the game on WJAW AM 630 at 7:45pm.
