Tribe snaps losing skid, tops Royals

The Cleveland Indians put to rest a 6 game losing streak yesterday afternoon with a 12-1 win over the Kansas City Royals to avoid being swept. The Tribe also managed to give Cory Kluber more than enough run support, certainly a breath of fresh air for the staff ace who has seen his team get shut out in 6 of the 21 starts he made leading into Wednesday.

Kluber went the distance for the second time this season and held the Royals scoreless until the top of the ninth. Kluber allowed 5 hits and one walk with 6 strikeouts to improve to 6-11. He leads the AL in innings pitched, ranks second in strikeouts and 6th in WHIP.

Rookies Giovanny Urshela and Francisco Lindor each hit home runs in a 6 run 6th inning and Michael Brantley capped the big inning with a solo shot of his own. Lindor went 2/5 at the plate and collected a team high 4 RBI. Brantley and Urshela each added a pair of hits, while Michael Bourn racked up 4 hits and Jason Kipnis contributed 3 of his own. Yan Gomes tacked on a 3-run homer late in the game and totaled 3 RBI in the win. The Tribe hung 8 runs, 7 earned, on KC's Jeremy Guthrie who lasted 5.1 innings while allowing 10 hits and a walk. Guthrie dropped to 7-7.

Guthrie plunked three Indians hitters and Tribe skipper Terry Francona was ejected in the 5th inning after arguing that Guthrie should have been tossed because a warning to both benches had already been issued. I like to think that the 6 run outburst in the 6th was proof that Tito was right and that baseball karma might exist.

Pirates finish sweep of Twins

Jung Ho Kang went deep for the second straight game and Andrew McCutchen added a two-run home run in the Pirates 10-4 win over the Twins at Target Field on Wednesday. The Pirates swept the Twins and have won 5 of 6.

McCutchen's blast tied the game at 3-3 in the 5th and the Pirates erupted for 5 runs in the 6th to take command of the contest. Pedro Alvarez scored the first run in the big inning on an Ervin Santana wild pitch. Starling Marte extended the lead to 5-3 with a sac fly. McCutchen would plate another with a single and come around to score along with Jaff Decker after two Twins errors on the play let the Pirates extend the lead to 8-3. Santana took the loss and falls to 2-1 after giving up 8 runs, 6 earned, on 8 hits, 4 walks, and 3 hits in 5.2 innings.

Francisco Liriano improved to 7-6 with the win. Liriano tossed 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits but just 3 runs, 2 earned, to go along with 4 K's and no walks.

The Pirates will travel to Cincinnati to begin a series with the Reds. Hear the Pirates Radio Network call of the game on WJAW AM 630 at 6:45pm.

Reds blank the Cards behind DeSclafani

The Reds were a 1-0 winner over the Cardinals last night and took two of three from the Cards with both wins coming by way of the shutout.

Rookie Anthony DeSclafani held St. Louis to just 3 hits in 7 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks to improve to 6-7. Jay Bruce connected for a solo homer off John Lackey, who dropped to 9-6, in the 2nd inning to account for the game's only run. The homer puts Bruce at 199 for his career.

Aroldis Chapman picked up his 21st save and struck out 2 in the ninth.

Hear Marty Brennaman and the rest of crew with the call of the opener against the Pirates from Cincinnati this evening on AM 1490 WMOA at 6:40pm.
