MPD Officers Introduce ALICE for School Safety
Posted on: 02/22/2010
By  Callie Lyons

Officers from the Marietta Police Department are helping Marietta city Schools prepare for the worst.

At the board of education meeting this evening, Sgt Rodney Hupp and School Resource Officer AJ Linscott  will present an alternative to the Code Blue Lockdowns that schools across the country have been employing when a potentially violent offender is at large.

A lockdown situation means classroom doors are locked, lights are turned out and students remain quietly in place until they are rescued or an all-clear is called.

But, Officer Linscott says this approach has proven to be problematic in many school shootings.

The program to be introduced this evening, called ALICE, is built on common sense principles that teach youth to listen, think barricade, escape and if there is no other option - to fight back.

The public is invited to attend tonight’s meeting to weigh in on the program. The board of education meets tonight at 5:30 at the administration office.
