The US EPA has named 44 high hazard coal ash sites in response to the failure of an impoundment in Tennessee last year.
Seven local facilities are on the list of those identified by EPA with high hazard potential. They include: the Pleasants Power Station at Willow Island, two fly ash ponds in Cheshire, Ohio, three fly ash ponds in Waterford, Ohio, and a fly ash pond in New Haven, West Virginia.
A high hazard potential rating indicates that a failure will probably cause loss of human life. The EPA says the rating is not an indication of the structural integrity of the unit or the possibility that a failure will occur in the future. Instead, it allows safety officials to determine where significant damage or loss of life may occur if there is a structural failure of the unit.
