Interest and concern over manganese in the air around Marietta has intensified in recent years since the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry identified it as their priority for future research.
While Eramet has received the public blame for elevated levels of manganese in the air, it appears as though MIE may share some of the responsibility and their rogue emissions may help to explain surprisingly high readings at air monitoring stations in Vienna and Boaz.
State and federal agencies are planning to work together to collect samples from MIE and other area facilities that handle manganese to gain more information about the unanticipated spikes observed in West Virginia.
