Brown Introduces Clinical Trial Legislation
Posted on: 05/07/2008
By  Callie Lyons

Earlier this week in Columbus, Senator Sherrod Brown discussed new legislation that would help make clinical trials more accessible to patients who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Currently, many cancer patients who want to participate in a clinical trial cannot because of the financial burden it imposes on them and their family. Brown worked with the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center to introduce the Senate version of this legislation. Representative Deborah Pryce is the House sponsor.

Brown said the bill would require health plans to cover routine care costs.

About 20 percent of patients who try to enroll in clinical trials are denied coverage by their insurers. Health plans pay for physician visits, hospital stays, and blood work as well as other items and services when a cancer patient receives standard care. However, many health insurers refuse to cover these routine care costs if the patient enrolls in a clinical trial, even as patients continue to pay monthly premiums.
