Special Events Coming to Wayne National Forest for Natrional Get Outdoors Day

The Wayne National Forest is planning a special outdoor fun event, coming up on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14. That Saturday is National Get Outdoors Day.
It starts on Friday at 5:00 pm with the ODNR Passport to Fishing program; a hot dog roast; and horse and buggy rides at Lamping Homestead Recreation Area, located on State Route 537 in southern Monroe County. At 9:00 pm, enjoy a night sky viewing aided by telescopes at what is surely one of the least light-polluted places in Ohio.
On Saturday the celebration moves to eastern Washington County. Forest Service spokesman Gary Chancey tells WMOA News about the day’s events…
“It starts at 9:30 at Leith Run Recreation Area, north of Marietta on the Ohio River Scenic Byway. The day’s activities include Passport to Fishing – always very popular with the kids, archery, water safety, mountain bike skills – you’re encouraged to bring your own helment and bike – rock wall climbing, thanks to the Ohio National Guard who are bringing the wall, police K-9 demonstrations, and a lot other things.
“At the river shelter at Leith Run, you and the kids can learn all about local land and water critters. You can touch live reptiles, too, if you want to. Lunch will provided to everyone who takes part. From 2:00 until 4:00, Kinderhook Horse Trails will provide horseback riding.
The activities take place on Fathers Day Weekend.
“Oh, yeah, the kids are gonna be asking Dad, ‘can we go to Leith Run?’ That would be a nice outing and it’ll encourage Dad to get outdoors. And bring Mom, too.”
