The newest drilling activity report from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources continues to show an upward trend in natural gas production in eastern Ohio.

While Carroll County continues to lead the state in production by a large margin, Monroe County, which borders Washington County to the northeast, rose to the number two ranking in the fourth quarter of 2013, producing a remarkable 6.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

The state says Monroe County is home to the most productive well in Ohio. It belongs to Antero Resources and produced 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas from October through December.

Rounding out the top five counties in production were Harrison, Belmont and Noble.

The number of Ohio wells reporting production stood at 335 - up about 40 percent in one year.
