Newest Phone Scam Uses HEAP Program
Posted on: 02/11/2014

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has issued another scam warning - this time relating to home heating assistance.
The Sheriff’s Office says reports are surfacing throughout the region and the state regarding a scam that targets recipients of Ohio’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
In several cases, a caller phoning from an 800- number claims to be a representative of HEAP or a similarly named emergency assistance program, and informs the victim that he or she has been awarded extra assistance due to the recent cold snap.
The caller then requests the victim’s banking information and sometimes the social security number so that the so-called extra funds can be deposited into the victim’s account.
Local residents are urged to not provide banking or personal information, and investigators ask the public to report any such solicitation to law enforcement immediately.
