In several cases, a caller phoning from an 800- number
claims to be a representative of HEAP or a similarly named emergency assistance
program, and informs the victim that he or she has been awarded extra
assistance due to the recent cold snap.
The caller then requests the victim’s banking information
and sometimes the social security number so that the so-called extra funds can
be deposited into the victim’s account.
Local residents are urged to not provide banking or
personal information, and investigators ask the public to report any such
solicitation to law enforcement immediately.
