Sheriff's Office Investigates Truck Trailer Scam, Domestic Disputes
Posted on: 01/22/2014

Yet another scam is being reported in the area – this one victimizing the transportation industry. Employees of Merchants 5 Star on Route 7 in Warren Township reported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office last week that the company was defrauded out of 568 dollars.

An unknown suspect claiming to be an employee of a business that Merchants 5 Star deals with contacted Merchants the previous day and claimed that a trailer owned by the business was stuck at a loading dock in Columbus and required repairs.

After sending the required funds,  Merchants received what appeared to be a phony invoice. The trailer in question was then found on the company’s local lot. It showed no signs of being recently repaired.

Company officials and deputies learned that this type of scam is becoming prevalent in the trucking industry. The case remains under investigation.

Checking other Sheriff’s Office reports...

Deputies recently dealt with three incidents involving separated couples.

Last weekend they were called to White Oak Street in Barlow, where William Ida of Parkersburg and Stacy Ida of Lexington, Kentucky, got into a dispute over property in their former home. After their investigation, deputies requested summonses for both parties for disorderly conduct by fighting.

On Monday, deputies went to a home on Wynncrest Drive in Warren Township after the resident reported that his former live-in girlfriend took his property, including a circular saw, shotgun shells, dressers, blankets, a lock box and a canoe. The case remains under investigation.

On Tuesday, a resident of Main Street in New Matamoras told the Sheriff’s Office his ex-wife was moving belongings from his apartment and he believes she stole three of his prescription medications. That case is also under investigation.
