Big Brother, Big Sister Program Starting
Posted on: 01/13/2014

You’ve likely heard of the Big Brother and Big Sister Program, in which adults mentor children and teenagers who need positive role models in their lives. Now, the program is getting underway in Washington County.
Cindy Davis with Family and Children First met with the County Commissioners to update them on local implementation of the program. It’s being funded with grant money and the part-time coordinator will work from the Family and Children First office.
The coordinator is Eric Long. He tells WMOA News that there are already Big Brothers stepping up to help…
“We currently have six. Three of them are Marietta College students, and we have two gentlemen in Parkersburg who matched up with kids in Marietta and Belpre."
He describes some of the plans for expanding the Big Brother and Big Sister program…
“We’ll continue on to an after-school program at Washington Elementary, where we’ll match them with some Marietta High School students, and then we hope to establish a similar program with Marietta College for some kids at the (Marietta) Middle School."
For more information about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, contact the Family and Children First office at 202 Davis Avenue, Marietta. The phone number is 740-376-7081.
