Southeast Ohio's Wayne National Forest Closed Except for Hunting, Hiking
Posted on: 10/02/2013

The U.S. Forest Service has closed all campgrounds and certain trails in southeast Ohio’s Wayne National Forest until further notice, due to the federal government’s partial shutdown

A Forest Service spokesman told ONN that trails for all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and horseback riders are now closed, as are campgrounds, including the Leith Run Recreation Area between Newport and Matamoras.

Parts of the Wayne are still open to hunting, and all hiking trails remain open.

Rangers and a limited number of firefighters remain on duty in the forest, but other employees have been sent home until further notice. Forest Service offices in Athens, Lawrence and Washington counties are closed.

In addition, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Pittsburgh and Huntington districts have announced that all public facilities along the middle and upper Ohio River are closed until further notice.
