MHS Spirit Rock Dragged Out of Town By Vandals; Now Back Where It Belongs
Posted on: 09/30/2013

Marietta Police are investigating the theft of a rock.

Not just any rock, but a large boulder known as the Spirit Rock, frequently painted orange, black and white by students as it (normally) sits on the Academy Drive side of Marietta High School.

Early Sunday morning, vandals presumably used a high-powered truck to drag the rock all the way from the high school via Routes 60 and 821 to DAV Road, where it was either dropped or placed on the side of the road, 0.7 mile east of 821.

Today, police are checking surveillance video from the school and several locations along the route, and charges are pending. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 376-2007.

The Spirit Rock was back where it belonged by late Sunday afternoon.

In other police news, two men have been arrested for domestic violence. Joel Gomez, 24, was arrested early this morning at 98 Acme Street. Jamie Waterman, 50, was arrested at 107 Knox Street on Friday.

In another incident, officers arrested 40-year-old Christopher Roberts of Enid, Oklahoma, for assault Saturday night after he allegedly struck a female bartender at the Holiday Inn.
