Unique Fundraiser on Valley Gem Saturday

Friday night, Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville is hosting a show in Marietta – on the river.
Brian Koscho (cos-co) is Stuart’s Marketing Director.
“It’s a fundraiser for the Nelsonville Music Festival, which is an annual event that Stuart’s Opera House puts on here in Nelsonville each year.  What we’re doing is having a riverboat cruise on the Valley Gem Sternwheeler, with the proceeds benefitting the Nelsonville Music Festival.  It will include some food from Kiser’s Barbecue in Athens and three sets of performances from musician Pokey LaFarge and his six-piece band.”
He says LaFarge is a very unique type of entertainer.

“(He’s) A throwback to performers from the ‘30s and ‘40s.  He does a variety of different music, in the folksy, Americana realm.  But, he definitely hits on a certain vintage feel.  The six-piece band is especially interesting, with a clarinet and horn player.  It’s a perfect kind of band to be playing on a sternwheeler going down the Ohio River.”
And, Koscho explains why they decided to do a fundraiser in Marietta.

“We’re always looking at unique ways to do fundraising events – doing different things that will appeal to people and fit in with our audience, and be a fun, exciting event.  This one was perfect.  We had talked about it for years, and it made sense to do this year.  Being able to do a fundraising event as unique as having it on a sternwheeler going down the river with a band playing with food and everything else is, we think, a perfect fit.”
Tickets for Friday night’s show are already sold out.  However, Koscho says they are accepting stand-by reservations.  For more information, you can call Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville at (740) 753-1924, or visit www.stuartsoperahouse.org.
