Veterans Outreach in Downtown Marietta
Posted on: 09/16/2013

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs mobile health unit from the Chillicothe VA Medical Center was in downtown Marietta on Saturday, thanks to an arrangement with Mayor Joe Matthews in which VA personnel gave flu shots to veterans while the city health department made shots available to families and non-veterans.

Matt Cox is outreach coordinator for the VA.

“We have 16 counties that fall under the Chillicothe VA. Marietta has a clinic, so we try to get out and make sure people know that the clinic and all its services are here. We take the bus out – it’s a 40-foot RV that’s really a little hospital on wheels. We take it all over southern Ohio.”

Saturday's event at the Armory was about more than flu shots. Cox says the VA is always working to make sure that veterans are aware of the various programs and services offered to them by a grateful nation...

“The Chillicothe VA offers what is called the ‘MOVE’ program, for people who want to get into more exercise. We have our diabetes program, with several coordinators here today talking about diabetes. We have a lot of programs with the homeless and with foster care, which we are really trying to push. On September 27 we’ll be reaching out to about 300 homeless vets, handing out sleeping bags and so on. Also, this is Suicide Prevention Month so we’re pushing that program as well."

Cox says the Chillicothe VA Medical Center is especially known for its Post Tramatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and environmental health programs.

To contact the VA for more information on vital services, he says "yo u can just call our main number, 740-773-1141, and there are operators to guide you to whatever areas you want or need.”

The number for the Marietta VA clinic on Colegate Drive is 740-568-0412.

The VA Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255 extension 1.
