Bank Robber Fails at Office in Marietta, Succeeds at an Actual Bank in Athens

Police say a man who thought he was robbing a Marietta bank but was in an administrative office succeeded in a second robbery attempt in Athens.
At about 1 PM Monday, a man armed with a handgun walked into a Peoples Bankcorp administration building at 206 Scammel Street and demanded cash. Employees had to tell him there was no money because he was not in a bank.

Fortunately he accepted that and left, walking up the alley between Scammel and Wooster...and between Second and Third streets.

At 2:50 PM, the same man - according to surveillance video - successfully robbed a Chase Bank branch on East State Street in Athens. He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured in either incident.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s, with a medium build, medium length brown hair and a several day growth of facial hair. At the failed Marietta robbery attempt he was wearing blue jeans, a black long-sleeve t-shirt, a blue ball cap and sunglasses. He changed into a tan t-shirt before the Athens robbery.

Anyone with information that might help in the investigation is asked to call Marietta Police at (740) 376-2007.
