State Route 7 Above Newport Reopened
Posted on: 08/23/2013
By  Mike Cullums
A rockslide yesterday morning shut down one lane of State Route 7, about a mile upriver from Newport. No one was injured and there were no reports of vehicles being struck. The slide occurred along a narrow right-of-way, with the river close by one side of the road and a steep cliff on the other.
By late afternoon, ODOT had erected temporary traffic signals to allow for two-way traffic in the northbound lane. Ironically, there are already temporary signals another mile up the road at the site of a previous problem.
ODOT is executing a contract for emergency repairs in hopes of getting the hillside stabilized and the road fully open within 30 days, but it could take as long as 45 days.
