A man has been arrested on two sexually-related charges allegedly involving a 12-year-old.
Marietta Police say 29-year-old Richard Lee Newlen of 608 ½ Front Street has been charged with rape and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.  It’s the result of an investigation that began Thursday evening.
The girl’s mother had called police to report that Newlen had touched the girl in a sexual manner and her mother was going to confront him.  When officers arrived, a dispute over the girl’s cell phone – given to her by Newlen --  was going on.
Newlen’s girlfriend wanted to check the phone, but the battery had been removed from it.
When the girl was interviewed, she told officers that Newlen digitally penetrated her and he claimed he was going to dump his girlfriend to continue their relationship when she turned 18.  The girl also said she and Newlen had exchanged graphic pictures via text message.
Search warrants were then executed on the girl’s and Newlen’s cell phones, revealing graphic pictures and text messages on both phones.
When he was interviewed at the police department, Newlen admitted to giving the girl a cell phone, and to taking out the battery when his girlfriend wanted to look at it.
When Newlen was questioned about the pictures on the girl’s phone, he said the pictures were not of him.  He was then asked who the pictures were of, and at that point he stated he wanted a lawyer.
Newlen was then arrested on charges of rape and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.  He’s being held in the Washington County Jail on $250,000 bond.
