The Marietta Police Department investigated a break-in that took place onboard the Valley Gem sternwheeler early Tuesday morning and arrested a man who lives nearby. The man allegedly brought his family to the crime scene.

Captain Jeff Waite says police were called to the Valley Gem dock at 601 Front Street on Tuesday morning after several items were found missing, including 16 eight-foot sections of steel cable tray, three extension cords and a work light, worth a total of $1,086.
Surveillance video footage showed a man known to police - along with his wife and two young children - climbing over the locked gates of the sternwheeler at about 10:30 Monday evening. The man then returned alone overnight to commit the theft.
Based on the video identification, police obtained a search warrant and conducted a search at 104 Washington Street. The sixteen cable trays were found in the basement, as were drug paraphernalia.
Police arrested Brent Deeter, 34, on charges of theft and breaking-and-entering.
During questioning, Deeter admitted to the theft and said he was driven to do it by a heroin addiction. Hes in the Washington County Jail.
