It's Play Outside Weekend
Posted on: 06/07/2013
By  Andy Rex
This weekend is a time for fun outside at the Wayne National Forest.
Assistant District Ranger Dawn McCarthy says "t his will be our second annual play outside weekend.  Saturday June 8 is National Get Outdoors Day.  This is an official National Get Outdoors event.”
Events get underway this evening at the Lamping Homestead in Monroe County with a horse and buggy rides and a hot dog roast.
McCarthy says there are events throughout the weekend for all ages.
“There is no age limit," McCarthy explains.  "We had children as young as two years old last year.  You can be anything from zero to a hundred.  We’ll have different things to do.  There’s face painting for the kids in the morning, and just a lot of different things they can do.  There’s no age requirement.”
Saturday’s activities are all at the Leith Run Recreation Area.  They include fishing, archery, orienteering, water safety, mountain bike skills, horseback riding and disc golf.  McCarthy says it’s a great family atmosphere.

“The whole thing is free," McCarthy says.  "Lunch will be free, and all the activities will be free.  We do have a chicken dinner from 5 to 7.  It’s technically free, but we’re asking anyone who would like to pitch in donations for next year’s event to please do so.”
The weekend wraps up with a birding hike on Sunday morning. The full schedule of events is below

Also related to National Get Outdoors Day, the Forest Service has waived fees for all recreation sites and trails in the Wayne today and Saturday.
Recreation sites include campgrounds, picnic shelter swim areas, and all of the multiple use trails.
Outside of this weekend, permits are required to use the trails.
A nine dollar reservation fee remains in effect for those reserving recreation sites online.
