MARIETTA, Ohio (September 28, 2016) - If you have enjoyed the river trail in the last few months, you've definitely noticed a special crafting process taking place in Muskingum Park near the gazebo.

A man named Perl Totman has spent his summer carving and whittling a pioneer sculpture into a local tree that, he said, had seen better days. The tree had been heavily damaged by an Emerald ash borer infestation, but Totman saw potential.

"It fits in with the theme of the history of the park," said Totman. "When I saw the tree had been stripped of bark, it just stood out to me. I just thought, 'This has got to be carved,'. It can't just stand there and die and not have any resource available from the loss of it."

Mayor Joe Matthews held a special ceremony Tuesday afternoon to commemorate the completion of Totman's carving. He concluded the event by presenting the man with a key to the city.

Totman said that receiving the key was a great honor and that he is proud of how the artwork turned out.

If you'd like to check out Totman's sculpture, you can find it in Muskingum Park across from the gazebo.
