NEW MATAMORAS — An environmental mishap was reported Monday evening in northeastern Washington County.

Clean-up crews are still on the scene of a large oil spill at the north fork of Mill Creek, located north of New Matamoras. According to the Washington County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), a tank from a conventional well sustained a seal rupture, spilling about 70 barrels, or around 2,940 gallons, of oil.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Wildlife Division, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the West Virginia DNR and area emergency management agencies are continuing clean-up and monitoring efforts. The total clean-up process is expected to take a few days.

Members of UNIGAS Alliance, an oil spill response group, say the incident is not dangerous to the public and no aquatic deaths had been reported as of Monday evening.
